Study: Ultrasonographic appearance of supraspinatus and biceps tendinopathy improves in dogs treated with low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy

Shoulder tendinopathy in dogs, particularly involving the biceps and supraspinatus tendons, can lead to lameness and musculoskeletal issues. A study aimed to explore the effectiveness of piezoelectric shockwave therapy as a treatment approach. Using musculoskeletal ultrasound, the researchers diagnosed tendinopathy in a cohort of 30 dogs. The treatment protocol involved administering piezoelectric shockwave therapy over three weeks.

Results revealed that 26 out of the 30 dogs had both biceps and supraspinatus tendinopathy on one limb, and 27 dogs had affected tendons bilaterally. Post-treatment, both cross-sectional area measurements and ultrasound scores of the tendons significantly decreased compared to pre-treatment values. Furthermore, lameness levels significantly improved following the piezoelectric shockwave therapy, regardless of the specific tendons involved.
